Message-ID: <955009FB42F26A4FBD8089943D981A9601143785@msd-exchange.msd.local> Hello Elementary Parents! Right before the holidays, it's important to have a culminating performance for the beginning elementary program- a chance to hear your kids and for them to strut their stuff! :-) So, Starting this Thursday (the 11th), I will be having in-class "performances" for the elementary classes! Here is the schedule: Thursday (12/11)- Beginning Strings (Thursday class) Friday (12/12)- Beginning band (Friday Class) Monday (12/15)- Beginning Band (Monday class) AND Percussion Tuesday (12/16)- Beginning Strings (Tuesday class) These performances are during your NORMAL class times...but they might end a bit earlier. We will have some instruction and then play some short songs for you. Please try to make it if you can! It's a big motivator for your children! We will NOT have class on the 17th or 18th because it is right before the break and I know from experience that many people tend to take off early for vacation! Thank you! Message-ID: <955009FB42F26A4FBD8089943D981A96011437CB@msd-exchange.msd.local> Hey Moraga Music community! It's Christmas/Chanukah/Kwanzaa/Tet/Festivus? time, and people are celebrating and giving gifts! Why not give the gift of music?? Especially for elementary parents- if you want to fan the flames of youthful musical passion, consider some of the following gift ideas, (separated for your convenience by relative expense!): $$$ Tickets to see a musical production: I recommend "Wicked"( for most ages), "Phantom of the Opera"(for middle schoolers), The San Francisco Symphony, Yoshi's jazz club (earlier performances are for the entire family!), Nutcracker Ballet in SF...look around! A new instrument! Check with your private instructor to see how long your current instrument will last. If you are in 7th or eighth grade, it is time to start considering that high-school-onward instrument investment! If you take care of it, that instrument will LAST a LONG TIME! (Some of the better players I know are playing on instruments from the 1940's...with strings it's the 1740's!!) You wouldn't learn to run in cement shoes, and you can't take music seriously playing on an ACME Trumpet-like object. Private Lessons! Don't knock it 'til you've tried it! A professional instructor to help increase your child's proficiency and confidence in band, orchestra or choir is just the thing to stuff in a stocking! (Or at least, a card promising the lessons...don't stuff instructors please.) Some students from Campo would love to teach younger students. Email me for recommendations! $$ Musical Paraphernalia! Cool equipment that makes playing a little more exciting! A flute stand! A new mouthpiece! A METRONOME! A music stand! Music Software! Check out some of the cool composing software available. Sibelius, Finale, Garage Band. Tickets to a cheaper concert! It's even better if it involves a group with your child's instrument featured. A violin concerto? A jazz combo with a tenor sax lead? A choir concert? $ A CD of some great musician playing some good tunes they would enjoy. I am working on a list of recommended musicians for listening, but I will gladly share some with you! A DVD of the same thing I just mentioned. Reeds! Rosin! Strings! A swab! A tune-up for the instrument! A piece of sheet music or book of songs they might enjoy working on. Private teachers can help with recommendations. Elementary parents, there are often cd-accompanied easy versions of soundtrack music (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Harry Potter, etc.) that will motivate them to play! Singers, there are more songs available than you can shake a tongue at! ...The whole point is, your perceived value of your child's musical pursuit has some affect on their efforts. If part of your gift-giving says "yes! I love that you are learning an instrument! I'm using my resources to help you and I want to be involved in your success! Santa digs your Tuba, too!" then the message will be clear! ...just my two cents. Merry Christmas from me, and enjoy your respective holiday celebrations!
