Message-ID: <955009FB42F26A4FBD8089943D981A9601143601@msd-exchange.msd.local> Hello JM Music Families! This week, we had a visit from local professional trombonist and teacher Tommy Davidson. Mr. Davidson came to give our middle school brass players a crash course in maintaining their instruments, including proper techniques and products to use on the different moving parts. "If you take good care of your horn it will last so long, you could let your grandkids play it when they get to middle school. Tommy's own trombone, he smiles, was made in 1950 and still works like it's brand-new! Thanks Tommy! I will be typing up his notes and distributing them to all the brass folks (even elementary!) soon! Adam Noel -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <955009FB42F26A4FBD8089943D981A9601143602@msd-exchange.msd.local> Hello JM Jazz Cat families! Did you know that we are invited by Campolindo High school to perform on December 11th at the Campolindo Performing Arts Center? Did you realize that there will be an up-and-coming professional musician (and graduate of Campolindo High School) on that program?? Also- We have been invited to play a short set at the Moraga Street Faire On MAY 9th (mid-morning). More details to come. We will most likely perform soon after the choral CMEA performance. You'll want to attend the faire anyway, so now you have TWO reasons to be there! Mark your calendars, jazz parents! Your kids get to represent JM Music at the community faire! What a great event! (30 minute set, tops!) Saturday May 9th! Thanks to David and Steven (and Debbie) Wetterholm, our Music representatives on the Moraga Youth Council for helping arrange this opportunity! Thanks for your support! Adam Noel -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <955009FB42F26A4FBD8089943D981A9601143603@msd-exchange.msd.local> Hello Moraga elementary Families! I'm very excited to see some of the positive growth in your kids abilities thus far! Thanks to all of the families who are obviously encouraging your kids to practice their skills at home. Let me encourage you with this- the CD will help! If they are not currently playing along with the CD (the one that came in their book), then get them started with it! I recommend that they continue playing over and over until it starts to sound as much like the CD as possible. The CD is a professional playing their part over a background track. Not only does it help them to hear what the instrument (and the song) is supposed to sound like, but it provides a fun "metronome" to keep the beat so they learn to play with an even rhythm. Even if none of that made sense to you, just try it anyway! :-) Also, thanks to the parents who take a little time to email or call me if their child is going to miss a lesson or change days. You have no idea how much that helps me to be sure that kids are not vanishing or getting lost while walking to class! Unfortunately, I do not get any absence reports from the elementary schools, so if your child is sick, I only know if one of their friends in my class tells me, or if you graciously remember to let me know. Thank you again! Adam Noel -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <955009FB42F26A4FBD8089943D981A9601143650@msd-exchange.msd.local> Hello Moraga Elementary Music community! If you are a typical family with a typical young person, at this point after a month of music your child should be achieving a level of familiarity with their instrument (read: BOREDOM) which makes it less exciting to open the case and spend much-needed time increasing musical skill (read: they aren't practicing nearly enough.) Congratulations! You are in phase 2 of musical instrument learning. This is when reality sets in, the initial "WOW" of opening a new instrument has lost its effect, and your child is faced with this: the honeymoon is over. I will do my best to keep shoveling information at your children for the remainder of the year, presenting it in interesting ways that make it easier to understand. I will also continue to assess their progress as often as we play in class! Your child's responsibility is to practice the skills for class. That means: -Review songs we played in class -Play with the CD (or DVD as we get higher in numbers and the CD runs out of tracks) -Play every day (15 minutes is best, but 5 or 10 is better than zero!) -look ahead about one page so they are ready to play the next class! -if necessary, write in any needed letters or fingerings for the next page. I recommend squeezing in time between different subjects of homework (it cleanses the mental palette for the next subject). You might also try playing during the commercials of an hour of TV (that's about 12-15 minutes~). Anyway, don't lose heart, don't give up and don't worry- it will get better but not magically! For those who are working hard and getting ahead- I offer the chance to "graduate" to the intermediate Cadet Band or Intermediate strings class mid-year if you feel so inclined...let me know! The choir is getting ready for "That 70s Show!" on the night of Thursday, November 6th at 7 PM. Ask your Band or Orchestra child if s/he is planning to attend (or play in it!). They know who they are!! Also, Choir parents- some of you signed up to help make the 70s (broadway) show more fabulous! Contact me if you have some cool stuff like a hard hat, Indian chief headdress, cop hat (am I saying too much?!) "Fro" wigs? Chains? Disco paraphernalia? Keepin' it simple is good, but let's make it fun too! :-) Also, a parent backstage (maybe from the "pit orchestra" people) would be helpful. Thanks!!!
