Message-ID: <955009FB42F26A4FBD8089943D981A960119159E@msd-exchange.msd.local> I have been happy to meet so many of you the last two days! I'm looking forward to an exciting, challenging year of musical learning with you and your children! Just a few notes: NOTHING is needed for the classes starting this upcoming week. We will cover basic rhythms and such after an introduction and role call. Start looking for instruments soon, especially baritone horns and trombonists! Local music dealers serve multiple school districts and sometimes run out of certain instruments (or certain QUALITIES of instrument). I apologize for the late LP information! Scheduling challenges made it impossible to visit the school before today! I am sending the packet home with your kids tomorrow, and they can bring it filled out to the first class meeting. If you can't make tomorrow's 4 PM meeting, no problem! Feel free to contact me (don't respond to this email, send it to anoel at moraga.l12.ca.us) if you have concerns or questions! Thank you for your support! Adam Noel -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I have updated the calendar for this year online (thanks Elaine!) , so it now includes the CMEA FESTIVAL DATES AND LOCATIONS! Also, Please note that the LMC Jazz festival date is gone and replaced with a New CMEA Jazz date. Los Medanos College decided to take a (permanent?) break from the LMC Jazz festival, so I had to find a different one for the Jazz Cats to attend this year. Please write down the dates that apply to you SOON so there are minimal conflict issues!! www.moraga.k12.ca.us/JM/Teacher/ANoel Thank you! Things went pretty well! We are learning simple rhythm patterns this week and doing a lot of roll-call related stuff. Two reminders: -LP PEOPLE and CP or RHEEM late-comers- don't panic! You can still join us (although percussion is now filled)! Just bring your papers to class! -Beginning BAND and STRING students need their books and instruments for this next week's classes! -INTERMEDIATE ORCHESTRA and CADET BAND students should come to class THIS week with instruments and books (same book as last year)! -BEGINNING PERCUSSION students need to have a book, drumsticks, drumpad and hard mallets for the next class! If you've already missed your Monday or Tuesday class, be comforted! By next week (the week of the 15th) we will begin working with our instruments and books, so you didn't miss the critical introductory lessons yet! I'll see you this upcoming week! It reminds me each year about the type of community support that Moraga is all about! If you missed my handout, you can look up that information along with the updated calendar and all sorts of other things on the JM Music Website (www.moraga.k12.ca.us/JM/Teacher/ANoel). One of the important points that I hope everyone got from my speeches was that Practice is for your child's betterment and that I make myself available almost EVERY day at lunch and after school to help with practice! You may include ANY outside-class-time work that your child does in music, including lessons, jazz, concert attendance and lunch or after-school practice on and off campus! Let me know what I can do to help you out this year! Adam Noel -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... For all JM Intermediate school music students I am available during lunch and after school almost every day. I offer guided practice time or just a place to get some practicing done with or without help. Unfortunately, it seems that only the same handful of students keep showing up! (I LOVE that they show up...I just want to see other students too!!) I want parents to know so that they might encourage their children to take advantage of this- especially 6th graders and inexperienced upper-graders! Plus, ANY practice time outside of class-time counts on practice records, which will be due after the last day of September! (is your child filling one out consistently? Get on them!!) :-) Thank you! Message-ID: <955009FB42F26A4FBD8089943D981A960114356C@msd-exchange.msd.local> Hello JM Music Families! I wanted to make you aware of some community activities which will feature JM Music for the 2008-09 school year. Two years ago, the JM Jazz Band was invited to play at the Rheem Shopping Center for the December Season of Lights event in celebration of the holiday season. In addition to the Jazz Band, a JM choral and string group also performed. The students performed near Long's and the Post Office and were well received, as they drummed up lots of spirit while people were doing their holiday shopping. The town of Moraga is very excited about featuring its talented school musicians at community events. Last year, for example, Miramonte's Jazz Band performed at the Community Faire at the Rheem Shopping Center, and this year the Acalanes Jazz Band is performing at the Pear Festival on 9/27. For the 2008-2009 season, JM Music has been invited to perform at the following events: Saturday, 12/6/08, at the Rheem and Moraga Shopping Centers (The Festival of Lights): 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. timeframe (exact times still to be determined) Saturday, 4/11/09, at the Moraga Commons (The Spring Egg Hunt): 9:45 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. timeframe Saturday, 5/9/09, at the Rheem Shopping Center (The Community Faire): 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. timeframe (exact times still to be determined); Performances will be on a special stage near Long's where JM Music will entertain with a variety of other performers to celebrate the faire. Even though the above events will be voluntary for JM music students, I hope that parents and students will seriously consider supporting these events, as they give JM musicians an opportunity to share their talents and shine in the community. We are also encouraging our fellow Campolindo musicians to join us at these events. This is OPTIONAL, but encouraged! Do you have some friends you enjoy playing music with? I can help you find some music that will be appropriate for the events. Please mark the dates above on your calendars, and I will keep you apprised of exact performance times when I receive them. Please feel free to call or email me with any questions. Thank you for your support. Adam Noel -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I am so pleased with the students! They are doing a great job with the most boring part of the class (and most important- the introduction!) Their practice does not need to be very serious quite yet, as they only barely know how to hold their instruments. HOWEVER- I also give them permission to "move ahead" once they feel confident with whatever we work on in class from here on! They should not feel "pinned" to the page we work on in class if they can figure out the next page or two on their own. Here is what we covered this week: BAND: Putting together the instrument, making a sound. STRINGS: Parts of the instrument, "ukulele position" for violin/viola, String identification PERCUSSION: holding the sticks properly, single strokes. They should really re-visit these concepts during the week so we don't have to repeat the lesson next week in class. STRINGS should not use the bow yet because they can damage it if used improperly. If the instrument goes out of tune, I can tune it for you if you come to class anytime! I IF anyone chooses to practice from the book, use the CD or DVD tracks to accompany you, so you can hear a professional player making the right sound on your instrument! I won't be able to do this sort of email all of the time (or I'd never LEAVE school!!), but feel free to ask me if you have questions about the instrument or the songs! Happy Playing!
