Message-ID: <955009FB42F26A4FBD8089943D981A9601143A2D@msd-exchange.msd.local> JM Music Families! After listening to 3 CDs of 40+ Choristers singing the SAME 2 exercises (following 2 bands and an orchestra!), I have finished the last round of auditions for this school year! I was pleased with many of them, and have definitely pinpointed the weaknesses for each ensemble! With this data I will be able to decide which areas are best to cover while rehearsing in class for the rest of this year. Also, for those who scored under a certain point range, I will be assisting them on an individual basis to give them learning strategies in those needed areas! THANKS to Paul Merryman, Yiyie Chen, Bridget Shone, Gillian Gray and Nika (my ringer!) Rejto for helping by recording the students all year, keeping the auditions as "blind" (and FAIR!) as possible! If your child has questions about their scores, I am available and willing to discuss them! Adam Noel -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <955009FB42F26A4FBD8089943D981A9601143A4C@msd-exchange.msd.local> Well, I got the official letter from San Ramon Valley HS, the site for our Band/Orchestra CMEA festival on Saturday the 2nd of May (check out the calendar!) CMEA (the California Music Educator's Association) hosts these events around the bay area to give school programs the opportunity to receive professional feedback from veteran teachers from many different parts of the bay area. The students report for a "warm-up" time, play about 3 selections for a panel of judges and a small audience and then proceed to a "sight reading" segment where they are judged on their ability to play a new piece of music they have not seen before. It's a well done festival that promotes competition against an ideal rather than between schools. Each group has the opportunity to receive a Superior, Excellent, Good, Fair, or Needs Improvement Mark from each judge, for a total of 4 scores. If the group receives 4 "S" ratings, they achieve "Unanimous Superior" rating, which allows us to get an official CMEA plaque for the wall. In addition, the school gets recordings of the performance with a running judge commentary for improving the quality, and we get a nice photograph of the group for posterity! (Families may also purchase one to take home!) Needless to say, in order to give the judges a true portrayal of our ensembles' sound, it is critically important that every member attend! The letter from the SRVHS CMEA festival committee includes our festival times, so here they are! Warm up Perform Sight Read Done! Concert Band 12:50 1:15 1:40 2:15 Symphonic Band 2:05 2:30 2:55 3:30 Orchestra 3:35 4:00 4:25 5:00 This is a "bring your own self" event, which may seem like a challenge, but actually allows for much more flexibility. The festival runs from 7:30 to 5:15, and if we all bussed to San Ramon, we would need to have EVERYONE arrive at 11:45 at JM, bus to San Ramon, and wait for their respective times (or wait until the last group finishes) so we can all leave together...THAT is a pain. Therefore, with private automobiles, there is limitless flexibility for arrival, departure, carpooling, chaperones, etc. More information is coming soon, along with the legal forms and so forth. This can be a very exciting and educational event for everyone involved! Please feel free to contact me if you need some help with making arrangements, etc... (families are free to attend as well, for moral support and a great performance opportunity...think of it as an "away game"...) Thank you for your support! As Indicated on the calendar, THIS WEDNESDAY, the 15th, besides being tax day, is also our annual "Best of JM Music" CD Recording date! Mostly, this does not affect anything as far as scheduling, but you should be aware because it is NOT the day to be SICK (or especially "sick") if at all possible! :-) During our regularly scheduled Band, Orchestra and Choir classes, Matt Fidler of Fidler audio will be digitally capturing 3 student-voted songs from each of our groups. Then right after school, Matt will be recording the Jazz Cadet band during their usual rehearsal time from 2:30-3:30. Lastly, the Jazz Cats (who usually meet on Monday/Friday morning) will need to stick around (or come back) for about 30 minutes so we can get a couple of their tunes on the disc. That is the only atypical scheduling for the day. The exciting thing is that the 2 jazz bands will be recording their songs with our guest artist from our April 23rd concert, MIC GILLETTE (Tower of Power lead trumpet)!! If everything goes smoothly, we should be able to be done by 4:00. Order Forms for our CD will be coming home soon!! (yes, elementary kids can buy them too!) The Moraga Education Foundation (to whom JM Music owes its very life...thank you for your donations!!!!) is putting on an "MEF Showcase Concert" at the Moraga commons. Their vision is to have all of the music programs from elementary through high school represented in the grand Moraga Commons band shell! This is an amazing way for JM Music to say "THANKS" to the community! The elementary school choirs will be singing, the Campo instrumental program will be providing chamber groups, and the campo choral program will be having their chamber singers sing. It has been suggested (and I am willing if you are!) that the JM Symphonic Band represent JM Music (because it's just gigantic and loud and awesome, not because I have any more love for them than any of the other kids in the program!!) SO- logistically this can be challenging, but where there's a will...you know the rest!! TIME: May 20th, 6:00-7:30 PM (although we don't play the whole evening!) PLACE: Moraga Commons! YES! WHO: Symphonic Band?? YEAH!!!! WHAT: A lot of instruments and equipment to move! Good times!!! WILL: Yes! I hope. Please talk to me! There are other options, but this is the best one I can think of. What better way to reach the community than the loudest, most heavily enrolled music group at JM? I can't stop thinking about how nice it is to NOT be announcing "This will be our final season because of state budget issues..." Thank you for your continued support! Message-ID: <955009FB42F26A4FBD8089943D981A9601143AD5@msd-exchange.msd.local> Hello Moraga Music Community! I wanted to put in a "good word" for YouTube.com. This site is a phenomenal collection of short videos from around the world. As a music resource, it is invaluable in many ways! I have found rare archived footage of the greatest musicians who have ever lived, biographies of composers and performers, and even instructional videos for instruments and styles of playing! The reason I mention this is that I have heard some students saying that YouTube is off limits to them at home, and I sometimes recommend that they watch certain videos for their information. Admittedly, just like the rest of the internet, there is good, bad and ugly available. I do not recommend YouTube (or really, any of the internet,) without supervision for most students. The YouTube staff does try hard to delete inappropriate materials, but sometimes the world moves faster than their censors (and the idea of "inappropriate" may vary between your household and the YouTube censors!) However, I do recommend that students be allowed to watch some of the performances and instructional videos if recommended by a teacher. You can (and should) at least check on them to make sure they are not wandering around aimlessly online or becoming addicted! My own personal "favorites" list is under the user name "MrNoelJMIS" and includes mostly performances (sometimes other middle and high school groups performing our literature, sometimes professionals), some master classes and how-to's, rare instruments, soloists, music documentaries (some include pg-13 topics but are mostly un-offensive), and of course some odd little funny videos. One of the latest musical projects on YouTube was the "YouTube Symphony", which called on musicians from around the world to contribute videos of themselves performing provided music written especially for the event by famous Chinese composer Tan Dun. The videos were reviewed, and Tan Dun and his staff chose a group made up from some of the world's finest musicians to play together at Carnegie Hall in New York, under the direction of San Francisco Symphony's own Michael Tilson Thomas! I happen to know one of the chosen trombonists, local teacher and musician Dr. John Brummel (who also runs "summer music at Stanley!") The remaining video entries were displayed in a montage on video screens during the concert, which happened last weekend. What a neat idea! Youtube is really riding the wave of the future. So please, don't knock it until you've tried it! :-) Thank You! See you at our next concerts! Adam Noel -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
