It will be a short performance for the Moraga Community Festival. I hope others in the department can come support our jazz band!! We will be playing (among other songs) a composition by the JM/Campo alumnus, now professional NY Jazz musician Alan Ferber, entitled "Moraga"! :-) Adam Noel -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <955009FB42F26A4FBD8089943D981A9601143983@msd-exchange.msd.local> Hello JM families (and future JM Families!) It is Spring time, which means that elective courses will be chosen for this year. I want to take a moment to advocate for music electives and hopefully answer some questions: Incoming 6th graders: You have essentially 2 options for your elective- either an exploratory "wheel" elective or a music performance elective. As a member of the wheel elective staff, let me encourage any students with an interest in music to choose a music elective rather than the wheel. As tempting as it may be to "explore", I can tell you that most everything offered in the wheel elective is based on skills which one either has already acquired or will soon acquire when needed in the future. If a student has a desire to participate in band or orchestra especially, it will NOT happen as part of the wheel elective (the "music" portion I teach is a music listening and appreciation class, not a performance group.) In addition to refining their music skills, Band, orchestra and choir students have the opportunity to serve their school and community, visit other places and play for people. Music classes will help students to develop critical skills for life including discipline, time management, mastery, cooperation, aesthetic appreciation and a love of music! Postponing enrollment for a year is usually not successful, as students are rarely motivated enough to continue learning their instrument without participating in a group class. I really recommend Concert Band or Orchestra for students with a desire to succeed on an instrument and bring to fruition their investment of 1 or 2 years of study so far! All incoming 6th graders (even those who have little or no experience) are welcome to participate. Please contact me with questions! 7th graders (current 6th graders): Congratulations on completing your first year in JM Music! I encourage you to continue participation for the 09-10 year. Although some classes will have the same name (Choir, Orchestra), all of the ensembles change every year (graduations, new members, changing instruments, etc.), and will have new pieces of music to explore! If you are considering learning another instrument for the fall, please let me know before the summer so we can properly set you up with a private teacher, camp or at least an instrument! I encourage all students with an enjoyment of music and a desire to learn more to continue studying music at JM. With other elective opportunities available, it can feel like a sacrifice, but please know that your musical skills will have long term effects on your life which will make it worth the "sacrifice"- and the challenge! I am glad that JM has been offering a program for the last 3 years where 7th graders (who traditionally had only one elective slot because of a double English period) may opt for a "Z" period to open a second slot, in case there is a second elective you would like to participate in. NOTE- you will most likely get your first elective choice, so if you want music, it needs to be in the top slot, or in slot 2 ONLY if you plan to have a Z period. Anything below slot 2 will most likely not be your elective class unless there is a conflict. 8th graders (current 7th graders): Wow! It's the end of your middle school career! I welcome you to finish up your music learning at JM with a bang! It's a wonderful journey you have taken, and now you have the opportunity to act as a role model and leader in the music classroom that has helped shape your abilities! I recommend this for any 8th grader with a continuing desire for betterment. All of my music classes are articulated with the high school level, meaning that 8th graders should feel prepared for the technical demands of high school. We will continue to have new music with other challenges, and I make myself available for extra help or challenges. I hope to see you all at the Spring Concert, standing as the graduating class of 2010! NOTE- please make sure you mark music as one of your top 2 electives (or 3 if you have 2 semester electives marked before it.) You will most likely get your top 2 choices, so if they are year courses, you will not get music as your elective class! I just wanted to make that clear to minimize scheduling confusion. I hope this was helpful! Please remember that I am here to answer any questions you want to ask. I plan to continue serving the community and helping shape as many youth as I can into upstanding citizens and musicians. Thank you for your support! (I'm not going to lie...at least I'm not skipping out for a ski trip!) :-) So, newbies have more time to work on their music before next week! Message-ID: <955009FB42F26A4FBD8089943D981A96011439F7@msd-exchange.msd.local> Hello JM Symphonic Band Parents! The Moraga Education Foundation (to whom JM Music owes its very life...thank you for your donations!!!!) is putting on an "MEF Showcase Concert" at the Moraga commons. Their vision is to have all of the music programs from elementary through high school represented in the grand Moraga Commons band shell! This is an amazing way for JM Music to say "THANKS" to the community! The elementary school choirs will be singing, the Campo instrumental program will be providing chamber groups, and the campo choral program will be having their chamber singers sing. It has been suggested (and I am willing if you are!) that the JM Symphonic Band represent JM Music (because it's just gigantic and loud and awesome, not because I have any more love for them than any of the other kids in the program!!) SO- logistically this can be challenging, but where there's a will...you know the rest!! TIME: May 20th, 6:00-7:30 PM (although we don't play the whole evening!) PLACE: Moraga Commons! YES! WHO: Symphonic Band?? YEAH!!!! WHAT: A lot of instruments and equipment to move! Good times!!! WILL: Yes! I hope. Please talk to me! There are other options, but this is the best one I can think of. What better way to reach the community than the loudest, most heavily enrolled music group at JM? I can't stop thinking about how nice it is to NOT be announcing "This will be our final season because of state budget issues..." Thank you for your continued support! So we got our time slot for CMEA Choir Festival on May 9th...and it's...8 AM! YAY! The good news is that it's in Lafayette at Acalanes HS, so it's not like you have to wake up too early...like I have to. I'll be sending out more stuff soon, but I wanted to give out the time as soon as I got it! (Still waiting for the other CMEA festival! Each one is independently run, so they won't necessarily all release their info at the same time.) Adam Noel -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Due to the half-day at the elementary schools, I will not be holding regular classes on Friday. HOWEVER- if you'd like to come some time between 12:30 and 2 Friday for some extra help (especially if you have missed some classes!), please LET ME KNOW and I'll happily be there for you. If you don't let me know by Friday morning, I will NOT be there!! Thank you and have a rejuvenating Spring Break! Adam Noel -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
